Please share your experiences with setting up SPF for the first time. Hopefully others can learn from it, or maybe the webmasters can enhance the website (this page being one such enhancement). We want successes and failures, but please keep it fair and without any emotions you may have.

How to edit:

  1. Create a new link on this page:
    1. Click "Edit text of this page" below
    2. Append a link to a new page, which is going to hold your story essays
    3. preview and save
  2. Create the new page
    1. The link you just created should be colored red. Click it.
    2. Select "(no template)" (just click "GO!")
  3. Enter your text, preview, and save.

If you have tested stuff out in the sandbox please remove it.

Postmortem of a first-time visitor

SPF is not for the fainthearted

Gosh this is complicated

I don't understand how to "append a link" how to "create a new page" or if anyone is ever going to see this page.

When do I start to tell my story ??? My idea is telling my story to see if someone can tell me what to do.

I don't understand most of what is said here... Nor what to do !!!

Let's save and see what happens

The wizard makes it really easy to create an 'ambiguous' (and faulty) record for a variety of reasons.

1) the 'include' bit is enabled by default regardless of whether the domain listed there publishes any spf record

2) the form is sloppy...if you just read the prompts, your mail server ends up getting listed several times in violation of your 'common mistakes' doctrine which says to list each server only once.

3) the whole 'other servers' section is poorly described...what does it mean to 'give arguments' to mechanisms.

This form could be tremendously useful with a little redesign. I think this technology is really important.

Also, this page could be better explained to those not so familiar with DNS:

http://www.openspf.org/SPF_Record_Syntax

As it's currently written, it is almost confusing as the RFC here:

http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4408.txt

If you want better adoption halloween contacts, it's important that you explain what is meant by 'A Records' and 'MX Records' right away. The term 'mechanisms' almost works, but still sounds complex. I have a degree in comp sci. and I still find your syntax description confusing and vague.
